Floca shares a large art studio with four other children’s books illustrators. Most were models for the train passengers (Rosenthal 2013).

The book cover is markedly different from the dust jacket. While the dust jacket focuses on the machine, the cover shows the vast ecosystem that the railroad disrupted. The bison retreated and were almost obliterated by the unregulated hunting by the new settlers, creating great hardship for the Plains Indians.

Illustrator Note

While a student at Brown University, Brian Floca took art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. He was in a course taught by author/illustrator David Macaulay when Avi was recruiting a student to illustrate his graphic novel City of Light, City of Dark. Macaulay suggested Floca for the job. During the project, Avi and editor Richard Jackson “treated a greener-than-green young illustrator with great generosity and trust” (Larson 2008, 33). Floca continued to work with both of them as he established his career. He illustrated Avi’s Poppy Stories fantasy series among other books; in fact, Locomotive is dedicated to the author. Jackson is the book’s editor.
